‘Anything from anywhere in India’ sums up the shopping experience in Delhi. The Connaught Place, Baba Kharak Singh Marg, Janpath, Dilli Haat, Hauz Khas Village, Chandni Chowk, Sarojini Nagar, Khan Market, Santhusti near Hotel Ashok, Greater kailash-1, and Lajpat Nagar are some the important shopping areas for all type of budgets.
Dilli Haat provides a unique experience for shoppers as the stalls here are run by craftsmen from all the states in the country. There are also numerous food stalls with local cuisines. Although the area is under the control of local administration, there are no fixed prices and so for many shopping here it is often a test of their bargaining skills. There is a nominal entrance fee.
For those looking for authentic handicrafts, there is a stall in the compound of the Handicrafts Museum. Artisans also demonstrate their work in the stalls. Sunder Nagar Market near the Oberoi hotel is another ideal place to hunt for artifacts. Another destination for handicrafts and handlooms is the Baba Kharak Singh Marg. Hauz Khas Village is noted for women’s clothes and jewelry. Chandini Chowk, with numerous lanes, sells brassware, jewelry and silks.
Shops selling clothes, jewelry, bags, gifts and local crafts dot the Janpath. Another place to shop clothes is Sarojini Nagar. The clothes here are mostly the rejects from export units. Similar are the shoe stores here. Pottery and crockery are the other items available here. Lajpat Nagar is a comparatively quiet market place and the shops mainly sell clothes, gift articles and electronic items.
